Over the last year I have begun to explore narrative storytelling through comics. The stories covered are mostly based in reality; sometimes they are very personal, political or experiences that wanted to be captured and materialised.
The longest comic I have worked on to date is “Across the Water", made up of 22 double pages. The pages were all hand-drawn on A3 paper using pencil, scanned and edited. This story took me 3 months to finalise and has been a great learning experience. I’m looking forward to exploring this medium further in the future.
The one-page comic I called “Neulich in Mitteldorf" uses a frame within a frame to illustrate the layered depth of the story. The comic is about the crossing of paths with a group of teenage boys that were part of the right-wing youth group “Der Dritte Weg”. In the centre of the piece is a group of people talking about the encounter around a fire pit. The images above and below the centre are of a famous bridge in that area of Sachsen and of the group of boys looking out over the nature in a mimic of Caspar David Friedrich. Framed by small mushrooms as well as abstracted profiles of known right-wing felons, I intended the work to feel and look somewhat like a newspaper flyer. This comic is an attempt at conveying the obscurity of passing realities, like being in the same place for the same thing yet perceiving the world totally and entirely different.
